Poultry Research Institute of the NAASU

The Poultry Research Institute of the Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences is situated in picturesque country-side of Slobozhanshchina, 40 kilometers to the south of Kharkov . The institute is a visit card of our village Borki.

It was founded in 1930 as The All-Ukrainian Poultry Research Institute in Kamyanets-Podolsk but then was reorganized in the Ukrainian Poultry Station, which was moved to Borki in Kharkov region in 1938.

In 1959 the Poultry Station was given the status of the Poultry Scientific-Research Institute, which is the leading center on poultry questions in Ukraine nowadays.

  In 1992 the Poultry Scientific-Research Institute became the Poultry Research Institute of the UAAS, which has such a structure:
- the department of poultry selection and genetics;
- the laboratory of poultry physiology, biochemistry and feeding;
- the laboratory of mycotoxicology;
- the laboratory of technology of poultry products production in individual and farm economies; 
- the laboratory of poultry reproduction;
- the department of poultry diseases prophylaxis;
- the department of marketing, where the patent-licence activity, works on standardization, information-and advertisement activity are carried out. In the Poultry Research Institute 126 men work.

There are 3 doctors of sciences, 22 candidates of sciences and 15 post-graduate students among them. Four crosses of laying hens, to wit Slobodskoi 2A, Borki 117, Borki-Colour and Ukraine , have been created by scientists of the Poultry Research Institute.

These crosses have the industrial significance and are used by poultry farms of Ukraine . It has been created two breeds of laying hens, such as Poltavska Clayey and Borki Coloured. Meat-and-laying populations of hens such as Golden, Blue, Speckled, Cuckoo and Snow are very popular among the farm and personal economies.

The turkey cross Kharkov broad-chested and two breeds of geese – Large White and Large Grey- have been created. Such four breeds of Ukrainian ducks as Clayey, Grey, White, Black with the White chest have been created by scientists of the Poultry Research Institute.  In the experimental farm “Borki” of the Poultry Research Institute of the UAAS the gene-pool of nine rare and disappearing breeds of egg hens is preserved, among them are: Australorp Black, Paduan, Bald-necked, Ukrainian Ushanka, Sussex Light, Yurlovski loud-voiced. It has been worked out the nature protected and resource saving technologies of production of poultry products, including: energy saving systems of making the microclimate in poultry-houses;  dose and forced feeding of poultry.

It has been worked out means of poultry disease prophylaxis, including vaccines against: - viral hepatitis of ducklings; - viral enteritis of geese; - Newcastle disease; - infectious bronchitis; - syndrome of the egg production decrease.

The work on making vaccines against the Marek’s disease and infectious encephalomyelitis of poultry is conducted. The preparations with the treatment and prevention effect under the mycotoxicoses of birds and the ways of their use in the poultry-farming are worked out. Some elaborations of the institute were used for drawing perspective plans of the poultry sphere development, selection programs in the poultry industry.

The business plans for economies are worked out; the consultations on poultry-farming questions are given.
